Smooth Transitions: Next Step Therapy’s Successful Succession

One of the most rewarding aspects of my role with the Chamber is witnessing the continued success of local businesses, especially when ownership transitions are handled with such intention and care. I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Melissa Bean and Carrie Warcholic, the new owners of Next Step Therapy, to hear about their journey and the lessons they’ve learned along the way.

Melissa began her career with Next Step in 2006 as an office assistant, and Carrie joined 6 months later as a speech therapist. Over the years, both women became deeply embedded in the organization, gaining firsthand knowledge of its operations and culture. They credit founder and former owner Tracy Cowles for preparing them long before they ever imagined ownership.

“Tracy trusted us,” Melissa shared. “She delegated meaningful responsibilities and gave us the space to lead, while always being available to guide us.” This balance of trust and support laid the foundation for a smooth transition when, in early 2024, Melissa and Carrie expressed their interest in purchasing the business. By November, the sale was complete.

When asked what made the succession so successful, they point to their complete immersion in the business over many years. Even so, they admit there have been surprises—the smallest operational details, shifting relationships with staff, and the sheer amount of time required to manage a business versus working in it.

Melissa and Carrie are committed to maintaining Next Step’s high standards while thoughtfully introducing gradual changes with input from their team. “We’ve learned it’s important to take risks, own our new roles, and seek support when we need it,” Carrie said.

Next Step Therapy’s story is a powerful reminder that successful succession planning doesn’t happen by accident—it’s built over time through trust, preparation, and collaboration.

We look forward to celebrating Melissa and Carrie’s first anniversary as owners soon with a special ribbon cutting.
